7 Questions for Andrei Duman

1. Tell us about yourself.

I am a Los Angeles based commercial photographer/director specializing in product, automotive and conceptual work. In the most basic terms, I click a button to capture a split second in time. In a more complex way, I am a highly detail oriented and technical photographer with a fanatical approach to composition, color, lighting and technique.

2. How did you discover your love for photography?

I have been fascinated with documenting the world around me for as long as I can remember. I always had some sort of camera with me throughout all my travels during my tennis career and that intensified as technology progressed. I love learning about new gear or a new technique that helps me mentally visualize a new project I am working on.

3. What inspires you and your work?

I draw inspiration from a lot of places, be it other artists, nature or world events. I am very aware of color and always try to weave it throughout my work either subtly or more forcefully, ultimately all depending on the project. I am inspired by those that are willing to push boundaries in their work or message. I am excited when artists try something new and help to progress the medium. Although I may not always succeed, I try to do so myself as much as I can.

4. Why did you choose broncolor?

Broncolor to me has always been at the very top of the industry. Not only from the quality of the construction, but more importantly the quality and consistency of the light that it produces. When photographers use external lights, it is crucial to have consistent results and Broncolor achieves this every time. The equipment is dependable, sturdy and very user friendly.

5. What is your favorite broncolor tool?

Although I love all the lights and modifiers which make my life so much easier on set, I am a huge fan of the 120x180 softbox. It provides a huge area of light that I can control with either the edge mask or flags. Another must have item for me is the pico light with the projector attachment. No other combination gives me this much freedom to make accurate minute adjustments.

6. How would you describe your “lighting style”?

My goal regarding lighting really depends on the subject that I am photographing but on average, I aim for the lighting to be consistent, clean and elegant. I pay particular attention to the amount and quality of light fall off on different types of materials.
